What Healthy, Quality Lawns Need: A Review
| Begin
your lawn with a proper foundation:
grass species, soils, sunlight, drainage
and efficient establishment techniques.
Measure the size of your lawn, calibrate spreader to apply the correct amount of lime and fertilizer. Use slow-release nitrogen formulations at moderate application rates only when needed. Mow lawn frequently to a 2.5 - 3.5 inch height. Leave clippings and keep your mower blade sharp. Monitor, identify and evaluate pests. Accept some level of pest populations. |
Use soil
tests to determine pH and nutrient levels. Adjust only as
recommended.
Use phosphorus-free fertilizer on established turf. Only add phosphorus when planting new seed or when called for by a soil test. Irrigate deeply, infrequently and during early morning hours. Control thatch levels and reduce soil compaction. Use pesticides only as a last resort, spot treat areas when pest populations exceed acceptable levels. |
